چکیده

A particle image velocimetry (PIV) system has been developed to measure velocity fields with order 1-lm spatial resolution. The technique uses 200 nm diameter flow-tracing particles, a pulsed Nd: YAG laser, an inverted epi-fluorescent microscope, and a cooled interline-transfer CCD camera to record high-resolution particle-image fields. The spatial resolution of the PIV technique is limited primarily by the diffraction-limited resolution of the recording optics. The accuracy of the PIV system was demonstrated by measuring the known flow field in a 30 lm]300 lm (nominal dimension) microchannel. The resulting velocity fields have a spatial resolution, defined by the size of the first window of the interrogation spot and out of plane resolution of 13.6 lm] 0.9 lm]1.8 lm, in the streamwise, wall-normal, and out of plane directions, respectively. By overlapping the interrogation spots by 50% to satisfy the Nyquist sampling criterion, a velocity-vector spacing of 450 nm in the wall-normal direction is achieved. These measurements are accurate to within 2% full-scale resolution, and are the highest spatially resolved PIV measurements published to date.

Velocity measurements of blood flow in a rectangular PDMS microchannel assessed by confocal micro-PIV system

This paper examines the ability to measure the velocity of both physiological saline (PS) and in vitro blood in a rectangular polydimethysiloxane (PDMS) microchannel by means of the confocal micro-PIV system. The PDMS microchannel, was fabricated by conventional soft lithography, had a microchannel near to a perfect rectangular shape (300μm wide, 45μm deep) and was optically transparent, which ...

Infrared Micro-Particle Image Velocimetry Measurements and Predictions of Flow Distribution in a Microchannel Heat Sink

The flow distribution in a silicon microchannel heat sink was studied using Infrared MicroParticle Image Velocimetry (IR PIV). The microchannel test piece consisted of seventy-six 110 m wide  371 m deep channels etched into a silicon substrate. Inlet and outlet manifolds, also etched into the substrate, were fed by 1.4 mm inner-diameter tubing ports. An image processing algorithm was develo...

Development of a Low Cost and Safe PIV for Mean Flow Velocity and Reynolds Stress Measurements

In this study, a white light particle image velocimetry (WL PIV) system which employs a light sheet generated with a flash was used. The system was developed in order to provide a cost-efficient and safe alternative to laser systems while keeping the accuracy limits required for hydraulic model tests. To investigate the accuracy of WL PIV method under different flow conditions, experiments were...

Particle tracking techniques for electrokinetic microchannel flows.

We have applied particle tracking techniques to obtain spatially resolved velocity measurements in electrokinetic flow devices. Both micrometer-resolution particle image velocimetry (micro-PMV) and particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) techniques have been used to quantify and study flow phenomena in electrokinetic systems applicable to microfluidic bioanalytical devices. To make the flow measure...

Micron-Resolution Velocimetry Techniques

This paper examines various techniques that have been developed to measure flow fields in microfluidic devices with 10 – 10 micron-scale spatial resolution. These techniques include Scalar Image Velocimetry (SIV), Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV), and Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). Advantages and disadvantages of these techniques are presented. PIV results are presented for a liquid flow thro...
